All-Star Games

All-star games provide amazing opportunities for sports fans to see the best of the best in each sport. Supreme athletic abilities are showcased during these games. All-star games are usually less competitive as they are viewed as a break or a vacation at the end of the season, depending on the sport. As such scores of all-star games are inflated, as defensive play is not stressed as much. Athletes have more opportunities to “razzle dazzle.”

Although basketball, hockey and football maintain this “fun” atmosphere at their all-star games, baseball has some quirks that change the nature of their game. Baseball is the only professional sport that places a reward for winning the game: the winning league (National or American) gets home field advantage at the World Series. This places a completely different light on the game. Rather than playing little to no defense to put on a show, teams and athletes play competitively.

Other elements of the game are affected due to this competitive nature of the game. Managers of each team will manage to win, creating a possibility where fans might not see all of the athletes that they would like to see. Many will argue that having something to play for actually improves the quality of the all-star game. Proponents believe that if there is something to play for the athletes will give their best effort.

Opponents of this format believe that an all-star game is not intended to be competitive. Perhaps fans do not come to an all-star game looking for a best effort. Fans come to an all-star game to be entertained. The NBA’s all-star game is a great example of the “fun and razzle dazzle” nature of an all star game. Sportsmanship in Life

Sports is one of the most effective classrooms for children to learn good values. Children who are fortunate enough to play organized sports have greater opportunities to learn lessons on values such as honesty, work ethic and obedience. Playing sports is not necessary to learn these values, but it definitely helps. The various sports naturally create perfect opportunities to instill these values and some can be rarely learned expect in the context of a game. Sportsmanship is an excellent example.

Sportsmanship entails many different values. Respect, honesty, fairness and friendship are parts of what constitutes good sportsmanship. This powerful combination is what makes sports so valuable for children.

True sportsmen treat others with respect. They do not demean nor mock. They address each other civilly and listen to their competitor’s opinions (this also includes referees or judges). As such, there is no arguing with a referee or fighting with an opponent when things do not go their way.

True sportsmen are honest. They follow the rules and do not cheat. They have integrity throughout the entirety of the game. Thus, sportsmen do not lie even if it would be to their benefit. Sportsmen do not cheat by modifying equipment or taking illegal drugs.

True sportsmen are fair. Situations almost always arise where a competitor can gain a distinct advantage during the course of a game. Sportsmen choose to forego these advantages to make the game fair.

In the end good sportsmanship encompasses how we deal with success or failure. Are we sore losers or do we accept defeat and commit to do better the next time. Are we prideful winners or are we dignified in victory?

Good sportsmanship is not only a valued attribute in sports but it is highly valued in the real world. In business or in just common associations with others – having good sportsmanship will help gain respect and friends throughout your life.

The Importance of Youth Sports

Every spring and summer children gather together in parks to play any variety of sports. Children join community teams to play anything from baseball to soccer. Youth sport leagues have grown to be a staple of communities across the world. They help develop both physical and social skills for children and also help build stronger communities.

Local leaders of municipalities have recognized the benefits of youth sports so much so that it is very common to find at least one youth sport league in almost every city or town across the world. Some statistics state that over 30 million kids participate in some form of sport or recreational activity.

National leaders have also recognized the importance of youth sports. The White House holds a traditional tee ball game in the South lawn in an effort to promote exercise through sports. The US Government has funded several programs promoting children activity whether it is through sports or some sort of exercise.

Outside of the natural benefit of exercise, children who participate in youth sports also develop a stronger self-esteem. Youth sports also help kids learn discipline and the importance of hard work.

Other life skills and attributes obtained through sports include: Team work and leadership; learning how to handle success and failure; a better appreciation for ones body and learning how to play by a set of rules. Youth leagues teach children how to work together in a common goal, perhaps one of the most important and most needed skill in today’s world.

A great example of the benefits of youth sports can be found in famous US Olympic swimmer, Michael Phelps. His mother states that the reason she kept Michael in swimming is because it offered him structure and rules. He learned how to succeed within a set of boundaries.

So remember how much good is coming from a simple youth game the next time you drive by a park filled with kids playing.

Schools have gym classes and sports programs, and private leagues or academies have programs during the year. But when school’s out and the sun is hot, lots of young kids are choosing to stay inside with their video games.
There’s nothing wrong with relaxation and entertainment, but exercise is still needed. Summer sports are a great option. Swim teams gear up around May and racing season ends with the summer. These teams, usually aligned geographically with the pool in their area, cater to kids of all ages. Swimming is fantastic exercise as it is both aerobic and anaerobic; it provides the need for oxygen to be used for energy, strengthening the respiratory system, and  resistance, which builds muscles.
Human bodies take glucose (sugar) and breaks it down using oxygen. This is then used to give birth to energy, and is aerobic, since it uses air to make energy.  Anaerobic exercise uses natural compounds in the body to create energy, when oxygen can not be found, i.e., a sprint. Both can be achieved through swimming.
Countless  schools and colleges also offer sports camps over the summer, where youngsters can learn to improve their athleticism, often from sportsmen who were in their same shoes not too long ago. Cornell University, Georgia Tech, and Brigham Young University all offer great summer camps for a wide range of sports.
Before too long school will be back in session, the winter will be coming on, and sports will be restricted to the gymnasium. The sunny summer months are too great of an opportunity to miss. So get out and enjoy the world, while staying in healthy shape, and bring the kids along too. You’ll save cash on the utility bill too–those gaming systems can be fierce.

Many times when people think about sports, they do not think about water sports. Sports that take place in the water are actually just as popular as many other types of sports, like soccer, football, or baseball. There is actually a large number of sports that include the water.

Swimming is one of the first sports related to water that most people think of. Many people swim, whether professionally or just recreational. Swimming is a great form of exercise and is also a very competitive sport. Along with swimming is diving. Diving is such a competitive sport that it is even part of the Olympics.

Underwater rugby is exactly what it sounds like. It is rugby that is played under the water. when playing underwater rugby, you try to score points by sending the negatively buoyant ball into the goal of the opposing team.

Canoeing and kayaking are both great sports that frequently have races attached to them. Paddle your canoe or kayak down a river or other body of water. You will feel the exercise you get in your arms from paddling.

Surfing is one of the most popular and famous water sports. Many people on almost all coasts enjoy surfing. Staying on the surf board can be difficult if you are new to the sport, but once you get the hang of it, there are many surfing competitions you can compete in.

There are areas that some people consider sports, but others do not. For example, some consider fishing a water sport. Others see it just as a recreational activity. Yachting is another of these activities that is argued about. Many feel that sailing a yacht, even if competing in a race, is not actually a sport, and should not be classified as such.

Dance is a sport that is frequently over looked. Many people see it as a type of exercise, not an actual sport. This is extremely far from the case. Even if you only classify a sport as something that has competitions, dance would fit into this category as well. In fact, competitive dance is an extremely widespread and very popular activity all over the world. There are many different types of dance, and a large majority of them have competitions.

Most people do understand that it takes quite a bit to be a dancer. Almost all forms of dance require a lot out of a person, physically. Because of this, dancers are almost always extremely physically fit. Not only this, but they must have flexibility, balance, and strength. Many times when rehearsing for a competition, a dancer will practice for months. In those months, they may spend hours a day on their routine.

There are dance competitions for both children and adults. These competitions can come in a variety of dance styles, with everything from jazz, pointe ballet, ballet, ballroom, and more.

There are actually over 200 production companies in the United States that are considered the competitive dance industry. Many of these companies tour to different parts of the country to find great dancers to add to their repertoire. This is great both for the company and the dancers. Having representation is a great thing for the dancers, because that way, they will be more likely to get into competitions, and even know about the competitions in the first place. It benefits the companies, because they make a portion of the winnings from the dancer, and possibly even make a portion of other monies that they may receive in the future.

College sports are dealing with a serious issue that pro sports have been dealing with for quite some time: the issue of head injuries in collision sports such as rugby and football. While it used to be a secret of the NFL that players would play with massive head injuries, sitting out a game because of a supposed headache, it turned out that these injuries had a massive impact on sports betting syndicates, influencing the outcomes of the game and winning and losing people a lot of money. However, no one was sure of what to about this practice, so it was allowed to continue.

In today’s world of college athletics, schools are placing an increased importance upon athletic trainers and athletic departments to watch out for head injuries. However, the main reason for their concern might not be the safety of student athletes, but the security of the school endowment.

Head injuries are not only a concern on the field, they are also becoming more popular in the courtroom. Head injuries are a leading cause of lawsuits, and schools are finding themselves in the midst of tough litigation. The issue at hand is the rules set in place for a player when they are feeling the symptoms of a concussion. There have been cases where the student has played before he was physically ready to and suffered further injury, thereby having to miss an extended amount of time on the field.

Currently schools are asking trainers who see concussion symptoms early to keep the player off the field. They are also asking for multiple days without symptoms before a player is allowed to return to play. Yet, the real trouble is that players aren’t always willing to give up that information, making it difficult to know when the concussion has occurred, and possibly making the school liable for the damages.

Trainers: The Unsung Heroes Behind Long Sports Careers

Professional athletes knocking down jump shots or sliding into bases in their nimble late 30s or early 40s are considered a marvel for a reason. There just aren’t a lot of them. A long pro sports career undoubtedly takes its toll on the body. But luckily, pro athletes get a lot of perks including the services of renowned trainers and physical therapists. While a lot of them enter the field because of a desire to be involved in sports, but lack the skills, they have truly become the unsung heroes of the sports world keeping all-stars literally up and running.

The path to training in the pros usually begins in college. For those learning at major universities, the opportunity is there to get experience in elite athletic programs that usual feature many of the sports stars of tomorrow. Ideally, a young trainer will concentrate on one particular sport becoming specialized in it and familiar with the rigors on the body and injuries common among its athletes. From there, the sky is the limit as a select few reach the coaching staff of professional sports organizations as the Strength and Conditioning Coach in charge of the entire team’s training and recuperating system.

Even when a trainer makes it into the pros, the learning doesn’t end. It’s imperative that trainers stay on top of the advances in surgery as well as new discoveries in nutrition. Such information can be the difference between winning a championship or ending a career early.

Some trainers will think way outside the box to keep their athletes playing. Arnie Kander from the Detroit Pistons of the NBA is known for incorporating unconventional healing methods and training regimens, fusing Eastern and Western medicines, from herbal drinks to copper bracelets. If you think that sounds crazy, just think one player under his guidance, Lindsey Hunter, played a remarkable 17 years in the NBA until his was 39. So the next time your favorite sports star goes down on the field, just know there is a guardian angel waiting in the locker room with a whole bag of cures.
