If you live in a mountainous area, or even if you just like to visit them, you may find that mountaineering is a sport that you enjoy. Mountaineering, also known as mountain climbing, is a fairly dangerous, but many say extremely exhilarating and fun, sport. Originally, this sport started out as a way to get to the very tops of some of the world’s highest mountains. Today, though, it is considered a great sport, and people do it on a regular basis. Depending on what type of rock, and in what weather, you prefer to climb, there are quite a few different specialties that are considered part of mountaineering. No matter what your favorite spot to climb is, mountain climbing in general takes a lot of athletic ability, experience, and quite a bit of technical knowledge.

If you have never gone mountain climbing, or even rock climbing, there are some suggestions for starting out. One thing that you may want to do is to find an indoor rock climbing course, so you can start to get a feel for what you are going to be doing, and do it safely. Rock climbing and mountaineering can both be very dangerous if not done properly. It is also highly recommended to get training, or at the very least a guide who knows what they are doing. If anything is done incorrectly when you are climbing a mountain, it may end up costing you your life. It is also a good idea if your guide, or at least someone in your group, knows the particular area that you plan to climb. Keeping an eye out for dangers that are difficult to see can become much easier if someone that you climb with knows the area well.

Aspiring Sports Stars Should Choose Their Position Wisely

If you’re interested in having a professional sports career it might be best to do some planning before you even start playing. It turns out that even though there is no ‘i’ in team, all is not equal on the payroll. While it’s easy to see that talent disparity will certainly lead to different salaries, what isn’t so easy to see is that pay will differ on average from position to position. This arrangement is prevalent in all sports. What position you play will have an affect on your pay as owners are alert to the average compensation to other players at that position. This brings up the questions of what positions receive the highest salary and why that is?

Consider the four major sports: football, baseball, basketball and hockey. In football the highest paid position is the quarterback followed by the offensive left tackle and defensive linemen. It’s worth noting the top three covers both sides of the field. In baseball hitters are paid more than pitchers, but their defensive position doesn’t make much of a difference. In a 2007 USA Today salary survey, they found that center is the highest-paid position in the NBA while the point guard is the lowest. Centers are also highest-paid in the NHL.

There are a few factors contributing to this disparity. The first being overall importance of the position. Having a successful quarterback is absolutely essential to winning in football. They control the game tempo and set the plays. Plus, they take the most hits. The same could be said of hitters in baseball and centers in hockey since they account for most of the scoring. The rarity of a type of player is another factor. This accounts for why centers are paid the most in NBA as skilled big men are in far less supply than point guards.

But if you’re seriously considering one of the many kinds of careers in sports it’s probably best to try to be the best irregardless of position. Sports stars are still paid a lot of money either way.
