Becoming an athlete takes a lot of hard work and dedication, and it certainly is not something that everyone can accomplish. Many people are only able to watch in envy while their favorite team players are playing on TV. Here are a few characteristics that make up a great athlete, and what they have to do to get there.

Perseverance is a must if you hope to become a good athlete. People involved in sports are unable to give up. Sure, the team may lose a game here or there or maybe even ten in a row. But if you aren’t able to persevere and work your way back up to the top then you will never succeed in your athletic endeavors. An athlete has the ability to keep their goal in sight and reach it, even if it takes a hundred tries.

Becoming an athlete is very hard work. It takes a lot of specialized training to learn the ropes of the game. You have to be able to commit to a strict exercise regimen because your body is your vessel in this profession if you don’t keep it in good shape you won’t see any success. After all, you’re competing against a lot of other people who are very much in shape.

The most important aspect in becoming an athlete is passion. If you don’t love what you do then you will find it a lot harder to continue dragging yourself through the motions every single practice and game. Not only will the lack of passion start to wear on your will power, but you performance will start to lose momentum as well. There are plenty of people out there that would willingly take your place, so if you don’t show a passion for your sport the team will find someone else who does.

The Important of Playing Well In High School Sports

There are many reasons that you should give it your best when you are playing on a high school sports team. The best part is that there are even reasons that span beyond high school. Here are a few reasons that might motivate you to give it your all during your next game.

One of the best reasons why you should always do your best during every game is the chance to receive scholarships to some really awesome colleges. Aside from playing well, you will also need to pay attention to your grades. Most scholarships will not be rewarded to students who don’t meet a minimum grade point average and other criteria. However, receiving a sports scholarship is a great way to continue doing something that you love when you go to college.

Another reason to do well while you are in high school is the potential for a career later on in life. Many sports recruiters watch high school sports teams very carefully in an effort to select the best new talent for their own. If you’ve always dreamed of going pro then this alone should be reason enough to give your best performance at every single game and practice session.

Another reason why sports teams are so important during your high school years is because they give you a chance to develop a good work ethic. You are given a chance to learn responsibility and how to be a good team player all of which are very useful skills in the adult work force. Every employer seeks employees that can act professional, work as a team, meet deadlines and show up on time. High school sports teams give you a great starting ground to practice all of those skills before you head out into the world on your own.

How to Become a Sports Writer

If you have always been someone who enjoys watching sports programs on TV, or perhaps you played football in your youth, then you might also enjoy becoming a sports writer. Becoming a reporter for a sports team or channel gives you an opportunity to do what you love and still get paid and it gives you an excuse to be at every game! Here are a few requirements that you will need to meet if you want to have a career as a sports writer.

The first and foremost requirement to becoming a sports writer is a passion for the sport that you will be writing about. Writers who do not share a passion with their given topic will never truly enjoy their work, and the work becomes very long and tedious. If you really don’t see yourself becoming immersed in the sport then you should probably find a different writing career.

In order to become a successful writer you will need to at least have basic grammar and spelling skills you can’t expect the spell check function to catch every error you make! There are plenty of free resources that can help you better your skills if you would like a refresher course. It always helps if you are already a relatively creative person as well so that you can come up with unique angles for your pieces.

Another very big requirement to becoming a sports writer is the time to commit to your job. Writing for a particular sports team or channel will probably require you to be at almost every game so that you can cover the events. If you can’t make time for this then you should consider focusing on a different type of writing perhaps finding a sports related niche to venture into with blogging or e-commerce.

The Route to Going Big in Sports

Cropped version of Ryan Caron (not shown), a f...

Every kid who shot a hoop in the backyard (or watched "Space Jam") has dreamed of being a big National Basketball Association (NBA) star. Some of those kids played municipal basketball at the YMCA, and some of those kids took the daring leap into public school ball in junior high. And some of those kids played basketball in high school, and some of those went on to play ball in college. And some of those kids went on to play for semi-pro and pro leagues across the world.  And a few circumvented the entire affair and went straight to stardom.
It really comes down to being one of the last standing. Sports injuries knock a lot of athletes off the path to pro ball. Other things come up; bills have to be paid, and until the big times, there’s no cash for dribbilng. People have to live, and don’t have the time to follow their basketball dream. There’s millions of accountants in the world, and only 450 NBA players.
College ball is important in the road to fame; consequently high school ball is too.  Yes, colleges do sometimes take walk-ons and there’s going to be somebody who suddenly found out they were an amazing point guard, but usually previous experience and learned skills will be needed.  College basketball is a good way to get noticed. If a player performs well and can rise in his conference, professional teams will start eying him or her. The simple statistic is that three high school basketball players out of every 10,000 (that’s 0.03%) will play in the NBA.
European basketball is becoming the vogue with up-and-comers. The European teams often recruit American players (Dennis Rodman started over there) and having a team or two on a resume helps with the NBA draft. Just like in college, when a player performs well, the bigger teams take notice, and if impressed, will start making offers.
Practice hard, play well, and make smart career moves–the NBA awaits!

The Healing Power of Sports

There are a few things in life that can connect seemingly completely different people. High school students connect with their peers, prisoners connect with their fellow prison mates, employees often connect with their co-workers and family members connect with each other. Each group shares a common mission or interest – yet many of these groups can easily fall apart. Relationships between co-workers can go sour or families can fall apart due to divorce. Sports on the other hand transcend almost all differences and fellow fans share a bond that is virtually impossible to break.

The common passion shared by fans of a sports team masks any other difference that they may share outside of the sporting world. Any conflict or disagreement that individuals have somehow disappears when it’s time for the game to begin. Competing lawyers may hate each other in court – but if both are Red Sox fans those differences fade once the first pitch is thrown. Neighbors could be embroiled in an intense feud – but if their Dallas Cowboys are playing in the Superbowl, all bitter feelings are forgotten.

Perhaps the best illustration of the bonding power of sports can be found in international events. The Olympics and the World Cup are prime examples of uniting countries in a common cause. It is hard to imagine any other time when you can find both old and young, rich and poor, ugly and pretty cheering together. Just search “World Cup goal reaction” on YouTube and you can find ample evidence of this fact.

Arbitrators should look more to sports given the powerful affect sports can have on people. Of course life cannot be one long sporting event but there is much to be said about the “healing power” of sports.

The next time you find yourself in a conflict with someone and you need a quick remedy try going to a game together. It just may close the gap between the two of you. Just make sure you are rooting for the same team.

Soccer Sports Betting – Tips to Keep in Mind While Betting Online

Betting on sports such as football is a fun way that fans can make some money from their favorite game. Not only do fans make a little money but they add some excitement to the game by placing a bet. However, some people may be confused as how to place a bet with online sports betting sites. The key is to find a reputable site with easy to follow instructions.

Thankfully most Internet betting websites are safe and easy to use. There are some websites that are not the best option for betters. Because of this there are a few things that gamblers should be aware of when choosing sports betting sites.

First, it is important to visit safe websites. While most sites on the Internet are generally safe to use, some individuals add codes to websites that can damage your computer or steal your personal information. Customers should remember that when they are visiting gambling websites they put their identity and finances on the line. In the best case scenario a malicious website can install a virus on a computer. The worst case scenario is that the owner of the website can steal personal information and impersonate the customer when making purchases with their credit card details. Legitimate betting websites will have accreditation from sports betting authorities.

Another aspect to be wary of when choosing a site is what the reviews written by the users of the website say. If a website is legitimate and safe it can still have some issues. For example, you want to pick a website that has good customer service as opposed to one that does not list any contact details. Generally, if customers see something that makes them feel uneasy, it is usually a sign that something is not right. An example of this is excessive advertising or websites promising guaranteed wins.

Is Poker a Sport?

An image of a person playing the poker varient...
Image via Wikipedia
With the ever increasing popularity of poker and the seemingly endless airtime of “no limit hold ‘em” games on cable channels traditionally geared for sports, the questions arise, is poker a “sport” and should a network like ESPN cover it?
This same debate pops up from time to time as the general public weighs in on whether or not some event is actually a “sport”. Bowling, golf, auto racing, yachting…all have been subjected to occasionally fierce debate over what constitutes a sport.
And the answer is that they are all sports. Everyone of them.
The problem with both sides of the debate lies in verbal semantics. Miriam-Webster defines “Sport” as “a source of diversion” and adds that the synonym for “sport” is “fun”.
Does poker fit this definition?
It does.
Is it a source of diversion? Advertisers are betting that the public thinks it is.
Is it fun? Ask someone who sat down at a twenty dollar qualifying tournament and gets up as a millionaire if they are having fun. The breathlessly shouted answer would be yes.
In fact, by the loose dictionary definition, nearly any hobby that anyone engages in can rightly be called a sport. Golf, bowling… heck, even chess or model building could fit this definition. Has no one thought to wonder why rugged outdoorsy types like hunters and fishermen are referred to as “Sportsmen”?
What has happened is that over time, the public has hijacked the adjective “sport” and bent the definition into something all together different. They say “sport” when what they mean is “Athletic competition”. Once the semantics are more clearly defined the original questions may be reworded and answered definitively.
First, is poker an athletic competition? The answer here is clearly no. While poker is a sport and an obvious test of endurance, it requires virtually no aerobic activity. For example, can someone who sits at home playing online casino games be considered an athlete? Sport, yes; Athletic competition, no.
Second should it be covered by a network such as ESPN? This is where it again gets tricky. ESPN has made its bones off of covering athletic competitions and if held to that narrow standard, poker on TV belongs on another network.
Then again, ESPN stands for Entertainment Sports Programming Network. Poker does fall under the categories of both sport and entertainment.
It deserves the coverage it gets.
